Montessori created the primary curriculum for children 3 to 6 years old after years of observation and work with children of all ages. The primary curriculum specifically aims to address the child’s needs at this age with a vision of the whole child. The child’s experiences from birth to six become an inseparable part of his or her character, and are the foundation for the child’s independent action and reflection in the future. The primary classroom includes five general curriculum areas: practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language and moral education; each of which is presented to the child gradually and according to his or her needs and capacities.
The toddler program is designed to meet the special needs and tendencies of children 2 to 3 years of age. Dr. Montessori realized that once a child stands upright and walks he experience of free movement birth”. Having experienced the independence of free movement the child is able to move into the larger social community.
The toddler experiences a biological and psychological necessity to move. The rapidly developing bones, muscle movement are an integral part of the toddler program. Moving furniture for various activities is built into the natural rhythm of her day. Psychologically the child needs to experience free movement and freedom within limits. Children in the toddler also develop their fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination through the use of various classroom materials made expressly for this purpose.
All classroom directresses are fully trained and certified Montessori lead teachers with varying years of experience. Each classroom is fully equipped with quality Montessori learning materials. Naturally, as each directress designs works to meet the needs of their diverse classroom student–body, many Chinese materials including Chinese arts, crafts, and cultural artifacts are incorporated as well, taking advantage of our vast local resources. Each child has an individual learning plan and record, which the classroom directress updates and follows every week, making revisions as necessary. Each member of the teaching team is familiar with the Montessori philosophy and Grace and Courtesy practices are upheld by all staff and children. The Montessori curriculum at TFLH appreciates the diversity of each child while bringing us together to celebrate our unity.
Every day, children are taught virtues by trained Virtues teachers in each classroom. These lessons are specially designed for preschool-aged children, with a complete curriculum supported by learning aids, including Virtues songs in both English and Chinese, Virtues Friends, texts, posters, and books. Throughout the school year, we focus on 19 virtues, which are taught, practiced, reviewed, and reflected upon by both students, teachers, and family members. Children are taught in a whole-group lesson through song, stories, and role-playing.
To actively engage the children with their learning, our Virtues in Action project includes regular updated photos capturing the children practicing their virtues and acknowledging their efforts and achievements in living the virtues. The photos are displayed on the hallway bulletins, with a virtues acknowledgment to caption each shot. Every month the virtues teachers lead a school-wide project where children put their virtues in action by taking care of the school and their classrooms, e.g. mopping hallways, cleaning the classroom materials, tending to the garden, looking after the petting farm animals, and tidying up the playground. Additionally, every couple of weeks, the school’s Virtues teaching team performs skits which highlight the virtue of the week to emphasize the use of virtues in our everyday life so that the virtues can really “come to life” for the children.
Each classroom has its own Chinese and English language teachers who are part of the class’ full-time teaching team. Children are taught in small groups according to their proficiency levels and age. Lessons feature interactive activities designed to engage students in a fun way.
